While the world is still recovering from COVID-19, a new concern, human metapneumovirus (HMPV), has begun to emerge. Initially reported in China, the virus has now been found in India, where the first case was reported on December 6.
Rising cases in the U.K. and global concerns
HMPV cases in the U.K. have recently doubled, prompting health experts to request data from Chinese authorities to better understand and control the virus globally.
What is HMPV and how does it spread?
HMPV is a respiratory virus that spreads through:
- Droplets from coughing and sneezing
- Touching contaminated surfaces
- Touching the mouth, nose or eyes after coming into contact with the virus
It is most active in winter, infecting people of all ages but often causing mild, self-limiting symptoms.
Current situation in India
HMPV cases are rising in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. In states like Himachal Pradesh, authorities have started investigating severe cases of cold, cough and fever.
Risks and severity
Health experts say there is no need to panic. Most cases resolve on their own. Vulnerable groups like individuals with a weakened immune system or pre-existing illnesses should take precautions like wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.
Should we worry about lockdowns?
Unlike China, where a prolonged lockdown led to a surge in infections due to lack of natural immunity, India is unlikely to face such a situation. Herd immunity and fewer severe cases make a lockdown scenario impossible.
Prevention tips
To stay safe:
- Wash hands regularly
- Wear a mask in crowded areas
- Maintain good immunity
HMPV is not a new or dangerous virus, and with basic precautions, it can be managed effectively.
